Buy Winterberry
Balled and Burlapped
Winterberry should be transplanted balled and burlapped. Plant in moist, acidic soil, although it tolerates a range of soils as long as the pH is not too basic. Full sun will result in the best flowering and fruit set.
Cultivars of winterberry include ‘Winter Red’ which is a scarlet cultivar with dark-green foliage and intensely colored fruit and ‘Winter Gold’ which is somewhat compact, with pinkish gold fruit and light-green leaves.
Possum haw (Ilex decidua) is native to the Southeastern United States. It has the potential to reach 20 feet, with beautiful, light-gray bark and complex branching. It is less hardy than winterberry and is more tolerant of basic soils.
Possum haw foliage is dark green and turns light yellow irt fall. It generally flowers the same time as American holly (Ilex opaca).
Cultivars of possum haw are ‘Warren Red’ which fruits heavily with bright-red fruit and ‘Byer’s Golden,’ an unusual cultivar with bright-yellow fruit.
Some Hybrids Have Best
Of the Characteristics
Probably the best available deciduous hollies are the cultivars that are hybrids of winterberry and fine tooth holly (Ilex serrata) that exhibit prolific fruiting, excellent fruit color and handsome growth habits.
Cultivars of deciduous holly cultivars you might consider are ‘Sparkleberry’ with an upright habit and very persistent scarlet fruit and ‘Bonfire’ with brilliant, true-red fruit in dense clusters.
