He said he also called on three area contractors, Jack Jenkins, Charles Jenkins and Richard Compton, who responded quickly. On Sunday they helped clear debris and stabilize the site. The Sheriff’s Office also providi ed assistance, especially overnight between Saturday and Sunday to make sure the fire stayed out, Mr. McCarthy reported. »«

On Monday representatives of the Department of Environmental Quality met Mr. McCarthy at the site. They agreed the fire was out. ' ’

Mr. McCarthy said it is impossible; to determine for sure what caused the fire, but experts say probably the snow capped the pile preventing gasses from escaping. Something, possibly a spark caused by compression, caused the gasses to catch fire. t!

Mr. McCarthy said the fire definitely came from the inside out, not the other way around, from hot ashes or anything else being put on the pile.

“It could have been a whole lot worse,” he said. “At least it was not' throughout the landfill. We couldn’t find anything where the fire started that will explain it.”
