Mr. McCarthy said truck traffic on U.S. 522 is slowly increasing, but it is still not as high as it' was when U.S. 17 was closed to truck traffic. Hi said some people on U.S. 17 want to close another section of it to truck traffic. When U.S. 17 was closed before, the county had mobile truck scales brought in and state police found various violations. He said truckers consider many things besides just what road is best. They will go out of their way to avoid scales, he said. >
Tom Junk, who lives across thg intersection from Mr. Estes said; “Moving the road might not have that much affect on Sperryville. Peopl^ might enjoy it more. People go around the comer and never stop. I’m not for or against the bypass,” he said “But the truck traffic is bad.” «"«’
J. Clifford Miller said his family owned land around Sperryville. “W§ got a lot of this concern going. My family would prefer not to have’ $ bypass, but it is something that needs to be done as inoffensively as possi* ble. We’re interested that it be as unattractive to truckers as it can b<x We’ll negotiate as hard as we can to have it be as village friendly an# Rappahannock friendly as possible.”
Mr. Fletcher said, “If you giv$ them a more direct route, it ca$ always be expanded. Once roads are built through Rappahannock County* people will come and the county wiB change dramatically. It may not help the village to have trucks go past Pete Estes’s house, but it helps die community of Rappahannock County as a whole. Several people spoke in favor of having Rappahannock declared d “scenic county.” Del. Jay Katzen said he would introduce such a bill if th$ Board of Supervisors ask him to: There is no current provision in statg code for creating “scenic counties.”
