A fire in an unused cell at the landfill was contained and put out Saturday.
County Administrator John VlcCarthy said landfill operator Harold Artz discovered the fire at the :ell, which has not been used for two nonths, at 7:15, shortly after he eported to work. He saw smoke coming out the side of the piled trash.
The Amissville Fire Department was called and responded by 7:35. Updike Industries, which contracts with the county to bury trash also responded and using heavy equipment gradually worked into the pile to get the fire out.
Mr. McCarthy said there was no flame until the backhoe had worked its way fairly far into the pile. From that point on he said it was douse the fire, dig into the pile until it flamed up again and douse it again. In all they had to dig about 30 feet into the pile before they hit normal soil from decomposition that would not bum.
Backup pumpers were supplied by the Washington and Castleton fire departments, Mr. McCarthy said.
