Gets Award The Charlottesville Celebration , Committee chose James R. Butler, 81, of Albemarle County to receive its Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award at a a program honoring Dr. King Jan. 14. Mr. Butler was born in '.'"Rappahannock County but had to ~ leave the county to attend high school , and college. He became the first black' head of an Extension Office in Virginia, in Albemarle County.When Mr. Butler first came to the “Albemarle office, it was segregated, ' and he operated out of a small room . apart from his co-workers. He assisted only black farmers. When the . office head resigned to attend graduate school, Mr. Butler was made head • of the office. Since retiring in 1979 Mr. Butler “has served as a member of the • Albemarle County Board ,of "Supervisors and a member of the board bf the Piedmont Virginia Community College.
