There will be a special mass at 11 a m., this Saturday, Jan. 27, at St. Peter’s Mission Church outside Washington to celebrate Father Albert Verbeke’s 50th anniversary as a priest.
The mass will be followed by a reception.
Last week Father Albert said he felt he had spent 50 years “shoveling snow.”
He was sent as a misionary from his native Belgium to China where he was studying language and making plans for his ministry when the Communists came to power in 1948 and he had to leave.
“They were moving too fast to put me in jail,” he said, “but they took my papers and that left me an alien in China without papers.” He said if he had not left, he eventually would have been put in jail as a spy.
