viding uniformly professional services. Ably supported by members and equipment from both the Washington and Castleton Fire Companies throughout the day, these volunteers made sure a potentially dangerous situation stayed under control.
In addition, I would like to thank the County’s on-site contractor, Mr. E.B. Updike, for working expose
the burning area in the disposal* cell, and thereby contain the fire and keep it from spreading. The county called on several local equipment operators to assist in this work, Mr. Ellis J. “Jack” Jenkins and his firm, Mr. Charles Jenkins of Tiger Valley Backhoe Service, and Mr. Richard Compton of Compton Excavating. All quickly mobilized on site and worked to contain the fire. Even with the fire contained Saturday evening, these operators stay busy Sunday morning clearing debris and stabilizing the • site.
Thanks are also due to the Rappahannock County Sheriff and Sheriffs Office personnel for a variety of support services, including inspection of the site through the night. In addition, Col. Dieter C. Knuepfer, Director of Emergency services, was of great help on site.
