Over 3500 acute care hospitals across the country were studied. They were divided into five categories: urban hospitals with fewer than 250 beds, rural hospitals with fewer than 250 beds, non-teaching hospitals with 250 or more beds, teaching hospitals with 250 or more beds, and major teaching hospitals with 400 or more beds.
CMH was listed in the top 20 urban hospitals with fewer than 250 beds in service; six of these 20 hospitals have fewer beds than CMH.
'For this category a total of 1,240 hospitals were studied. Fairfax Hospital, the only other hospital in '"Virginia included in the top 100, was in the category of teaching hospitals with 250 or more beds in service.
