According to IRS Commissioner Margaret Richardson, “IRS is modernizing the way it does business to make filing and paying taxes less taxing.”
High tech options available include electronic filing by computer using either a home computer to file the Form 1040 PC or 1040-ONLINE using a commercial on-line, service or transmitter.
“It doesn’t matter if you paid your taxes in full through withholding or estimated taxes, expect a refund, or have a balance due. The IRS will let you know within two workdays of transmission that it has received your return,” Ms. Richardson said.
Among the most popular and simplest of tax filing options is “TeleFile.” This option allows single taxpayers with no dependents, with less than $400 of interest income, and taxable income of less than $50,000 to file their tax return using a TouchTone telephone. Taxpayers eligible to use TeleFile will receive a special tax package containing Form 1040-TEL.
The IRS now finds that almost half of all filers use the less complicated Forms 1040A or 1040 EZ or an electronic filing format.
Taxpayers needing additional forms can call toll-free 1-800-TAXFORM (1-800-829-3676). Forms are also available at many post offices and the county library.
