The annual, county-wide student music contest will take place this year at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, at The Theater in Washington.
This contest, which is sponsored every year by the Rappahannock Lions, encourages our young musicians to develop their musical skills. It is part of a state-wide, Virginia Lions program, the winners of which receive significant music scholarships.
It is called the Bland Music Competition in honor of a notable black composer, James A. Bland. Among other works, Mr. Bland wrote “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny”, which is the official state anthem.
Rappahannock Lions co-chairs Joan and Norman Getsinger have been working with school administrators and music teachers and hope for the widest possible participation.

Richey's Art
In Richmond
Warrenton artist Tanya M. Richey, who sells from galleries in Washington and Sperryville, has her art on display at the State Capitol in Richmond Jan. 25 thourgh March 10.
The show is on the 7th floor of the General Assembly building at 9th and Broad Streets.
Del. Jay Katzen, is hosting a reception for Mrs. Richey from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan 25.
Included in the exhibit are three large paintings of the towns of Warrenton, Washington and Sperryville. This is the first time these three paintings have been shown together, Mrs. Richey said.
Also included are 20 other paintings including a series Mrs. Richey calls Blue Ridge Wildflowers and various whimsical portrayals of animals.
