The Department of Environmental Quality Report for 1997 on water quality monitoring in the Rappahannock River Basin shows high nonpoint pollution for the upper Thornton River in Rappahannock, the lower Thornton including Battle Run, Mill Run and the Thornton River in Rappahannock and the lower Hazel River.
Citizens associated with the Ragged Mountain Resource Center have received training and monitor 14 sites in Rappahannock County. For information about that contact Jay Gilliam of the Isaak Walton League at 377-6179.
Senator Murphy told the commission that goals should be added, to those they have already identified in their memorandum of goals, to address reducing toxins and nutrient pollution and to restore underwater grasses.
The memorandum, besides lacking any identifiable specific action, also lacks any possible means of evaluation.
The commission members said they see themselves as a gathering and sharing body. The commission has no regulatory authority and many members feel it should stay that way.
