Today, most realize the competition is not 10 miles away — it is 200 miles away. The result has been much more cooperation. Once they realized the benefits, there has been cooperative marketing. People have realized they get more bang for the buck by pooling their resources,” said Steger.

Traditionally, most Virginia visitors come from New York, _ Pennsylvania, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia, she said.

Virginia gets about 50 million person trips per year, and that is a conservative estimate, she said. Statewide, the average stay is 2.4 nights with $168 spent per trip.
