I saw the grosbeaks only because I glanced away from the computer screen and saw the bounce of a leafy mulberry twig; a signal that a bird — or two — had landed on it. Then I saw the two brown-streaked females with unmistakable big ‘grosbeak’ bills, like that of a cardinal. The two grosbeaks, pausing during the flight south, looked like typical females of that species. Certainly they were not mature males with their startling black and white plumage set off by a rosy-red splotch on the breast.
