In the area of historic tourism, Virginia received a huge boost when Public Television’s acclaimed Civil War series by Ken Burns was broadcast in England by the BBC.
Steger said state officials “struck a deal” with the BBC which agreed to air a telephone number for British viewers who were interested in visiting Virginia. “We got 30,000 inquiries in three months. Twenty-four percent actually came,” said Steger. “We were floored.”
Another element that has changed Virginia tourism is the advent of the bed and breakfast industry. According to Steger, the industry can trace its roots to the Bicentennial celebration in Charlottesville more than 20 years ago.
