Overall, tourists travel more often and their stays tend to be shorter in duration than in decades past, said Steger. She said tourism officials received a “big jolt” in 1986 when a Marriot-commissioned study revealed that 70 percent of all American vacations consisted of long weekends. “That changed the way we advertised. We began to focus on niche marketing.”
Steger said the state began to identify groups of tourists who come to satisfy specific interests — Civil War buffs, antique collectors, outdoors men, etc... Each group is identified, then targeted with ads placed in specific advertising vehicles.
