Mr. Tompkins recognizes that “a large constituency in the town is passionately opposed to any sort of septic solution,” and “there is also a constituency that perceives the situation to be very dramatic and terrible.”
He believes that some kind of onsite natural water purification and recycling system is the best alternative for the town and would bridge the gap between doing nothing and installing an expensive standard sewer plant.
There is a “prevalent misconception that only one solution” exists, he stated in a Town Council meeting earlier this summer. “We control our destiny by making a good faith effort to deal with our issues head on. There are at least four, perhaps six, technologies available today” that could serve the town well.
Responses to a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a Feasibility Study for Wastewater Treatment issued by the Town Council in May are temporarily on hold pending completion of the income and sanitation surveys.
Bidders submitted cost estimates and alternative approaches to providing treatment facilities or otherwise solving the town’s wastewater problems. Estimates ranged from less than $10,000 to approximately $50,000 to complete the study.
