The Rappahannock Planning Commission has been working on an amendment to the Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance, as a means of controlling development of the county’s mountain tops, for several years now. They were very close to having it done with their first written proposal earlier this year. Supervisor Mike Massie, who felt the proposal was too restrictive, and whose view was echoed by some county residents, made a proposal of his own.
The Planning Commission, on which Mr. Massie sits as a representative from the Board of Supervisors, then made a third proposal — a combination of the other two. Many residents have stated, as have some members of the Planning Commission, that the issue needs to be resolved and a proposal sent to the Board of Supervisors in order to get it done, or not.
The Planning Commission will hold a work session to iron out what to do about all the proposals on Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the courthouse.
To date, about 50 county residents have publicly expressed their views on what should or should not be done about controlling development on mountain tops.
Even taking into account those who have spoken privately to Commissioners or Supervisors, and those who don’t have an opinion one way or the other, there are still many people unaccounted for. The work session is open to the public. Let your Commissioner know what you think.
