program implementation, and by Washington Post education writer Jay Mathews on his experience with the IB program at school systems in the Washington Metro area. IB program goals, according to its mission statement, include developing students into “critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners, and informed participants in local and world affairs . . .”
The IB process includes features that all Board members found beneficial, a Theory of Knowledge course that helps develop critical and logical thinking; a Creativity, Action and Service Program that requires that the IB student devise and implement a community service activity; and an Extended Essay that requires that the IB student engage in an iri-depth study program and to document it in a 4,000 essay.
Board Chair Dr. John Tble noted his concerns that the IB program could be perceived as elitist, focusing on college-bound students, but said that he saw the program as valuable to all students and “advocates getting it in place.” The School Board’s Curriculum Study Group will further evaluate the IB program.
Athletic Field Bids Opened
