Visiting the park
It is estimated that 1.5 to 2 million people visit the park each year, about one third of which are from Virginia. The park is open year-round. Skyline Drive is open as much as possible, except for during and immediately after periods of winter weather.
According to a 1992 Virginia Tech study, visitors to the park spent just under 90 million dollars that year in the area. Just under 2.4 million of that was spent in Rappahannock County.
The park has approximately 175 permanent and 60-80 seasonal employees. These include everything from Park Rangers to administration and public affairs to concessions workers.
Ms. Rothgeb addressed two issues brought up by Times editors. One is pollution. Smog and ground level ozone c^n be a problem for park visitors from time-to-time.
