Ms. Rothgeb noted that there is little the Park Service can do about the problem. Personnel manning the entrance stations can warn visitors about smog or high ozone levels, but there is not much else that can be done.
Another issue is safety. The murder of two young ladies in the park during Memorial Day Weekend, 1996 is still in the minds of some. Ms. Rothgeb said that the FBI and park officials are still investigating the incident, and hope to close the case soon.
She added that such problems in the park are rare, and that safety is generally not an issue. The park has its own law enforcement personnel, and a search and rescue team.
