In sixth grade, Mike Nelms set two goals for himself: to play professional sports, and to become an entrepreneur. He met those goals as a Washington Redskin during the 1980’s, and now as owner of Champion Chevrolet/Oldsmobile/Toyota in Culpeper.
In giving back to the community, Mike stopped by Rex’s Sports Bar & Grill on June 3 to kick off a Redskins Ticket Raffle to raise money for Hospice of the Rapidan’s Benevolent Care Fund.
Redskins fans, business owners, and the sponsors of the ticket raffle enjoyed meeting and talking with Nelms, while munching appetizers provided by Rex’s and dodging cameras. Longtime Redskins fan and raffle ticket sponsor Nancy Garrett reminisced with Nelms about the “good old days” and compared notes on the now Jack Kent Cooke stadium.
Later Nelms discussed the challenges of business ownership with Sherry Roberts, coowner of Pat’s Floral Designs in Madison and Beyond the Garden Gate Floral Shoppe in Ruckersville. “What a charming man,” commented Hospice Executive Director Patsy Tuffy, noting that his busy schedule made his appearance even more appreciated.
