Lyn Rothgeb, Public Affairs Specialist with Shenandoah National Park, took some time last week to speak with editors from Times Community Newspapers about the park.
Ms. Rothgeb, who has worked with the park for almost 30 years, gave the group some information about the park’s history and what one will find in the park, among other things.
History of the park
Shenandoah National Park was authorized by Congress in 1926. Contrary to how most national parks were created prior to this time, most of what is now the park was privately-owned land.
No federal dollars were used to purchase the land. Instead, the state of Virginia condemned the land, requiring the owners to sell and relocate. Using state funds and private donations, 3,870 tracts of land were purchased over the next ten years.
In December of 1935, Virginia gave the deeds to the Federal Government and Shenandoah National Park was established. It was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936, and Skyline Drive was completed three years later.
