For the last nine months, calls have been coming in to the Extension Office from folks planning ahead for the coming Y2K event. Predictions about how much impact the year 2000 computer changes will affect families vary widely. Some believe it will be a non-event. Others predict major shortages and systems failures.

Regardless of what your crystal ball says will happen with the close of the millennium, planning ahead for how to handle power outages is always wise, because Y2K or no, the power at times will fail.

The most frequent "question I receive is how much chlorine can be added to keep water safe in storage. We do not recommend this method of storing water.

You can prepare your containers by rinsing with a dilute solution of one tablespoon of bleach to a gallon of water. Once the containers are prepared, you can fill them with tap water and hold it for a few days.

If the stored water is refrigerated, it will keep for about a week. Water that is to be stored for a longer period of time should be disinfected just prior to drinking.

There are several ways that water can be disinfected. The first is by boiling. If you have access to a heat source, boiling water vigorously for 10-15 minutes will make it safe to drink.

The second method is chemical disinfection. Household bleach is acceptable, as long as it is pure bleach and has no additives such as soap, detergent or perfumes.

If one percent bleach is used, it takes 40 drops per gallon of water, four to six percent chlorine bleach takes eight drops per gallon of water, and seven-10 percent bleach takes only four drops per gallon.

Mix the bleach and water thoroughly and let it stand for 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor. If it does not, add another dose
