The cake cutting ceremony should be done about an hour after dinner has ended. This will allow time for dancing and the champagne toast. Often times, the bride and groom will put off the cake cutting, but you owe it to your guests to do it as soon as possible. Not everyone will want to stay to the end.
About two months out, you will want to decide on the menu and beverages for the event. Will you be doing a buffet or sit-down? What kind of wine, beer, and champagne will you be serving? What will the hors d’oeuvres be? Will you have an open bar?
You might be concerned that some of your guests will drink too much with an open bar. Seldom have I seen a problem with guests getting drunk, but there is always the potential.
The best way to combat this potentially lethal problem, is to keep the pace of the wedding moving. If the cocktail hour exceeds an hour, you could have a problem. Another thing people are worried about is the expense of the open bar. Hypothetically, with a wedding of 100 people, two drinks per person at $4.95 each will yield a liquor bill close to $1,000. In the grand scheme of things, this is not very much money, but it may be an expense you do not want to pay.
