What you will find

The park covers approximately 195,500 acres. Of that, 79,579 is Wilderness under an act of Congress in 1976. Skyline drive spans 105 miles from Front Royal on the north end to Rockfish gap, near Interstate 64, on the south end.

In addition, the park contains 514 miles of trails, including 95 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and 150 miles of horse trails.

The park has four campgrounds with approximately 700 sites and 279 rooms for lodging. Ms. Rothgeb commented that you should be able to find a campsite on a normal weekend.

Should no sites be available, there are a number of campsites just outside the park. “It’s nice to have development outside the park, in some instances,” said Ms. Rothgeb.

Wildlife is abundant in the park. Species of animal include bobcat, raccoon, black bear, white-tail deer, gray fox, rabbit, beaver, and striped and spotted skunk, along with around 200 species of birds. Coyotes are now being seen in the park as well.
