have to burn ourselves out in carrying on the mission reflected in the county’s 1970’s-era Comprehensive Plan, a mission so forward looking that it is almost unbelievable that a rural community thirty years back could ignore the lure of the real estate development dollar in favor of qualities of life approaches to growth.
It is somewhat frightening to contemplate the prospect, however remote, of Rappahannock going the way of Loudoun, or Prince William or Culpeper counties ... of seeing fast food restaurants on 211 at the Rappahannock border ... or even of living with an eighteen hole golf course laid out along the Thornton River. Rappahannock, I don’t need to tell you, has successfully and proactively evaded the consequences of population growths and shifts, and unfettered development and sprawl.
The pressures, however, never diminish, but grow stronger and stealthier as the stakes are raised.
The development engine is gathering strength as it consumes our neighboring counties, and will need new ground on which to feed when it has finished there. Rappahannock remains a tasty morsel, and could provide sustenance for decades, if allowed.
