whefe parents are not so visible. There are many opportunities for parental involvement at both schools, even if you can only help for one hour per week, during the evenings or for special events.
The high school is an especially important setting for volunteerism. Even though the students are more independent at this age, the needs at RCHS are just as great as at the elementary school, just in different areas. When students see that adults care enough about their education to become more involved, it naturally carries over to the students. Two areas at RCHS which need immediate staffing by volunteers are the Room 19 Computer Lab and the office phones. The computer lab must be monitored by an adult in order for students to visit this valuable resource where they may finish homework, complete research assignments and more. Without volunteers it is locked and students may not enter.
The phones ring frequently (to say the least) in the office, as parents and others call with numerous questions or information. With each call the secretaries and office aides must repeatedly stop other important takes to respond to the phones. Volunteers who help answer the phones free the secretaries and aides to leave their desks and complete other important student related functions. This is a great way for a volunteer to get to know more about the school and its programs.
