On Tuesday evening, Aug. 17, children who were participating in Camp Fantastic at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center enjoyed food” and entertainment provide^ by restaurants, businesses, individuals, and civic clubs in and around Rappahannock County.
This was the 17th year that Camp Fantastic, a camp for children between the ages of seven and 17 who are cancer patients at NIH, has been conducted. Camp Fantastic is sponsored by Special Love, Inc.
Along with the 100 plus children, doctors, nurses, and 4-H teen leaders who serve as camp counselors attended camp.
We work with a great group from the community to plan, this event each year. This year, our committee consisted of Sandra Jenkins, Ester Settle, Jan Makela, Marie Davis, Hal McDermott, and BobMetcalfe.
The theme for this year’s Rappahannock Night was a circus. Treat bags filled with a cjowp wig, sunglasses, and red noses were prepared for each camper. Charlotte Tummeyer, Karla Miller, and Robyn Kaye were there with their ever popular face painting.
Jan Makela got all the “willing’’ volunteers in the spirit by painting their faces, tpoj, “Doodlebug” the clown entertained the crowd with her sidekick, “My Buddy”, and made balloon animals.
Captain Jeff Brown brought his snow cone marine, and he and Jason Kaye handed out snow cones throughout the evening. Jimmy Swindler, with his helpers, Josh Makela and Jesse Palmer, made sure there was plenty of freshly popped popcorn for the campers.
Blues Fuze provided music and, had “children” of every age swaying and dancing, and Matt Miller and his assistants entertained with their juggling. Abigail Gille, Debbie We.l^h, and Jane Naramore were there with the pony rides that the>= campers enjoy so much, and Pat and Charlie Sher brought llamas.
