Lower design program planned
Hardie Newton, a nationally recognized garden design specialist who lives in Madison County will discuss and demonstrate her work in a program at the Old Sperryville Bookshop on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.
Her talk, entitled, “The Creative Hand,” is free and open to the public. The speaker is the author of “Hardie Newton’s Celebration of Flowers, a book on bringing the beauty of floral design to home and garden. She is a Virginia Master Gardener and a frequent speaker before garden clubs across the country.
Ms. Newton has done design work for the National Geographic Society, Arlie House and Montpelier, among many other public and private clients. She learned bonsai techniques in Hawaii, studied in England, trained at the American Horticultural Society’s River Farm, and installed plantscaping into the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Special drum performance set
The Charlottesville Community Drum Choir will be performing at the Blue Moon Cafe in Sperryville on Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. The community is invited to bring drums and join in a jam after the performance. Admission is $5.
CCDE is a group of 10 of your neighbors from Sperryville, Orange, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville and Richmond, who are sponsoring fellowship through their passion for drumming. Janet Kerig, a Rappahannock artist, will be playing bass drums. She has performed in Soil and Soul, a collaboration with the Ki Theater in 1993 and Friends of Gaia.
Quilting Group to resume
The Quilting Group will resume on Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. at the Rappahannock Extension Office’s conference room. There will be instructions for beginners and help available for the more experienced. There will also be new patterns and helpful hints for all. Bring a project or just bring yourself and have fun. Fall festival, auction set
The Rappahannock Farmers’Association will sponsor their annual fall festival and auction on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Windsor Lodge Farm, Flint Hill. Cost is $15 per person and children under ten will be admitted free. For more information call 636-3842.
