While Red Delicious is still king of Virginia apples, other varieties, including what are called antique apples, are sought by consumers looking for variety. Antique apples are old-time favorites such as Grimes Golden, Arkansas Black, and Albemarle Pippin which are most frequently found in roadside stands and pickyour-own apple orchards throughout Virginia as well as in specialty sections of some grocery store produce departments.
In all, there are about 1,500 varieties of apples grown in Virginia, with more than 14 varieties commercially available. Virginia, the sixth largest apple supplier in the nation, has becdmd a major player in supplying retailers throughout the East Coast because of the state’s proximity to 70 percent of the population in the United States.
Apple shipments to these population centers are available through 24 hour and overnight delivery. Controlled atmosphere storage makes Virginia a major East Coast Supplier 10 months of the year.
Virginia apple growers expect to ship approximately eight million pounds of apples beginning this month and going through May.
