bird banding and surveys - has repeatedly proved it so. We are not aware of them for they are silent and furtive.
I know. For many happy September hours I sat in a burlap covered blind with my camera and telephoto lens focused on a tiny, man-made, pool at the base of a dogwood tree outside our house in the woods near McLean, Virginia. Water slowly dripped into the shallow - no more than an inch deep - pool from a hose high in the tree. The woods were silent except for the screaming of jays. Birds, attracted by the dripping water, drifted down through the dogwood tree like autumn leaves. They drank and bathed.
Most were warblers that had nested in the far northeast and were on their slow, deliberate way to the tropics. I photographed - or aimed to photograph - these tiny birds with such evocative names as Blackthroated Blue, Black-andwhite, Bay-breasted, Redstart, Magnolia, Blue-winged, Chestnut-sided, Worm-eating and Parula.
