The First Washington

History reveals many interesting facts. Rappahannock was part of Culpeper prior to 1833.
The editor of the paper, The Blue Ridge Guide, was given a copy of “The First Washington” complied and edited by Mr. Clyde Baggarley. He was a student of history and the town attorney.
The town had a number of this publication printed with George Washington’s picture on the front. It carried a copy of the original plat made by George Washington in 1749.
Mr. Baggarley proved his own records that George Washington did survey and plated the Town of Washington on July 24, 1749. In 1847 the plat was found in Fairfax’^ surveys and grants. It was in good condition showing original boundaries.
Note: A copy of this publication is in the First Washington Museum as well as copy of the original plat, name of the purchaser of each lot and the price he paid for it. If the lot wasn’t paid for in a certain length of time it had to be resold.
Mr. Baggarley stated when the capital in the District, of Columbia was established which was part , of Virginia, a great effort was made to change the name of this little village. There was great opposition. A copy of George Washington’s will, is also in the museum.
