Judge’s comments out-of-line.

As if the light sentences received by Danny and

Bonnie Sue Baldwin in federal court for tlieir

role in an illegal bear-anatomy trading scheme were not Controversial enough, remarks made by presiding Judge James H. Michael Jr. are an insult to virtually everyone in Rappahannock County.

We think Judge Michael has thought too much about the case, and in trying to understand why the Baldwins committed the offenses for which they were charged, came up with excuses that have tarred all ol us.

His reference to "instinctive folk thinking" as a reason to violate game laws was already far enough off-base, but his expressed belief that the bear-parts business is an "inbred philosophy that exists in this general area" goes way too far.

The crime the Baldwins committed had nothing to do with the character of Rappahannock County, and everything to do with something far more simple: greed.

We don't know if Judge Michael has ever set foot in Rappahannock, but we re certain he hasn't met very many people from here. Except maybe Danny and Bonnie Sue Baldwin, and that's too bad.
