First the corn had to be gathered. In days gone by this was a time consuming task and hard work. The stalks or fodder had to be cut. A shock of fodder was 16 hills square with each hill being three feet apart.
At the center of the 16 hills you tied the tops of the com pulled together. You twisted the tops to form what was called a saddle. This was formed to set the cut corn against and kept the corn stalks upright until it could be shucked.
The big event was the shucking or husking, and this required a special tool. It was a piece of metal, curved at the end with a leather strap to fit
