repeat season and a glowing write-up.

Direktor has a reputation for consistency, and that's easy to see. At a thousand-poundsplus, he's the size of a modest all-terrain armored vehicle. But when he noses shyly at yet-unfinished breakfast morsels, and nibbles invitingly at the journalistic pen, it suggests nothing if not that, off the racecourse, he's a pussycat.

Then again, it could just be media spin.

Public relations agents for the spring point-to-point season's defending champ include an array of dogs and cats that circle the stable yard, and a few cackling hens in the coop nearby. Heading the parade is trainer Dorothy Smithwick, backed up by owners Wendy and Vaughn Clatterbuck and jockeys Gregg Ryan and Simon Hobson. Smithwick assistant Pippy McCormick adds depth to the tag-team.

"You should see him in the paddock," says Hobson, aboard the champion for two of his three hurdle wins last season. "He knows he's cool."
