logic to argue his position. What does surprise me is how far this “honorable gentleman” is from any understanding of the basic conservative tenets and traditions of American citizenship.
And when I say conservative, I mean values that are deeply rooted in our Declaration of Independence, our Revolution, our Constitution, and in the teachings and writings of our Founders.
Since Senator Barry is chairman of the Senate education panel, one would have assumed his familiarity with these rather basic concepts. But that, of course, would be a foolish assumption. It seems to me that the position of a “spineless pinko” would be exactly that of Senator Barry.
In communist and fascist countries, patriotism is mandated and freedom of thought is tightly controlled by the state. In freedom loving countries patriotism is encouraged by example and freedom of thought is a given. When the state says “you must salute” rather than “saluting is good because of these inalienable reasons” we have crossed the line between democracy and demagoguery, between the joys of participation in a special ritual and the chilling spectre of state indoctrination.
Simply put, to demand allegiance is to assure not getting it. Ask Saddam Hussein. To provide the flag pledge in every schoolroom is an honorable thing, but to demand it be spoken at risk of harsh penalty is by definition un-American.
