The Rappahannock County wrestlers had their eyes opened to what it’s like to be at the Districts in wrestling and what it’s like to wrestle with the best. The gym was packed with screaming students and families of the competing wrestlers and excitement was in the air.
The RCHS squad was expected to finish last with their first-year team in the States’ toughest Single A District. They weren’t expected to put five wrestlers in the Regionals next week.
Although the team did come in last, five Panther wrestlers managed to finish in third or fourth place and become the first Rappahannock County High School wrestlers to earn a spot at next weeks Region B Tournament.
Sophomore Jeremy Graves pinned his Strasburg opponent in the consolation match to earn the third place spot in the tournament and finish the highest of Panther wrestlers. The five Regional qualifiers are: 112 pounds — Junior Johnny Ferdetta 4th place 140 pounds — Junior Garner Smythe 4th place 165 pounds — Senior Chris Graves 4th place 189 pounds — Sophomore Jeff Scroggins 4th place 215 pounds — Sophomore Jeremy Graves 3rd place.
The Regional competition will be held at the Madison County High School gym on Saturday, Feb. 27. Wrestlers that finish in the first four spots in each weight class will advance to the State Wrestling Tournament to be held at the Civic Center in Salem, Virginia on Thursday/Friday, March 2 and 3.

Saturdays: The indoor soccer league continues their program with instruction and games from 4 until 8 p.m.
Sundays: Softball clinics/instruction continues for all girls in grades 6 to 12 from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. Baseball clinics/instruction continues for all boys in grades 6 to 12 from 2 until 4 p.m.
