our earliest citizens came to these shores to escape oppressive “laws of obedience.” And was it not Mr. Jefferson of Virginia who swore “upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man,”? Was it not Mr. Henry of Virginia who said “give me liberty or give me death,”? Was it not Mr. Madison of Virginia who created the extraordinary Bill of Rights that solidified the American nation on an assurance of unprecedented civic freedoms?
Does Senator Barry not understand the definition of tyranny? Of liberty? Of freedoms? What does Warren Barry think all this means? Why does he behave and speak like a “spineless pinko”?
Does he not understand that patriotism cannot be mandated, and that when in fact that is tried, those movements become history? Is he not familiar with the Federalist Party and its demise after the Alien and Sedition Acts? Hey y’all, these are important questions, and in our nation the pop quiz comes every day.
Well, “pinko” Senator Barry and his crowd seem to want to tell all of us when to pray, when to salute, and most likely when to go to the john. I think his legislation is idiotic, and if he were to call me “a spineless pinko” I would punt his pudgy frame from Scrabble to Chuckatuck.
But the senator may be half right. His opponents will certainly be “spineless” if we do not recognize this piece of foolishness for what it is, and oppose it with “eternal hostility.”
