This past weekend, St. Peter’s Catholic Mission on Route 211 near Little Washington celebrated the Memorial Day weekend with two special events. On Saturday, the “The Missionaries of Charity” (the religious order established in the 1950s by Mother Teresa of India, now Blessed Teresa of Calcutta), were invited to Rappahannock County for a special mass honoring the new Pope, Benedict XVI.
For the sixth time in as many years, the sisters who live and work in Washington, D.C. were invited to Rappahannock County for “A Day in the Country.” In Washington, D.C., the sisters run an orphanage, a soup kitchen, and support many of the local poorer families by providing them with clothing and other basic needs. In addition, the sisters have a home for AIDS patients, as well as elderly and disabled people who would otherwise be homeless. The home, named “The Gift of Peace,” houses about fifty men and women. St. Peter’s Mission played host to both the sisters and some of their residents at the noon ma^s with a barbeque afterwards.
