The second meeting of the Ceramics Workshop sponsored by the Arts and Crafts Project was held Tuesday at the J. L. Kilby lake near Sperryville with 9 of original 12 ladies present. The first , day of class, Mr. Joseph Carter, instructor showed by demonstration and lecture how to work up local clay into the right condition for making pots. Many tricks of the potters trade were demonstrated for producing jars, pitchers, and bowls. Mr. Carter has been an instructor at the Corcoran Art Gallery Studio. He supervised the class as they practiced “wedging” clay into a pliant medium for shaping objects. At the second lesson Mr. Carter showed some of the objects that were made on the first day which he fired during the week. The class was amazed at the different colors produced by firing different clays. At this meeting the members made ai variety of different things and sun baked them in preparation for future meetings. Other steps will be firing, decorating, and glazing.
