work on a farm for fours months. There she lived in a small tent, worked on the farm, and learned to make goat cheese by hand as part of a program called Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF). Upon her return to the United States, Sheuerlein decided she needed to be closer to her home in North Carolina, and found herself an internship at Waterpenny Farm in Sperryville, Va.
“I chose Waterpenny because it involved a young couple just starting up and I wanted to learn the process of starting up a farm,” said Sheuerlein.
Finding roots in
Rappahannock
Soon after she made Rappahannock her home, Sheuerlein fell in love with the area. “Rappahannock is a unique place of artists and musicians and real people living reed lives,” said Sheuerlein. After a two-year internship at Waterpenny, Sheuerlein decided it was time to branch out and started her own farm, Peacevine Farm. Peacevine Farm spent its first year on the property of John Kirshner and Maiy Walsh. After a horrendous season of rain and hurricanes, Sheuerlein’s crop was left completely submerged in water and Sheuerlein realized she would have to relocate.
