Paddler Update
Last week, the Rappahannock News reported on the canoe journey of Richard “Freeman” Allan.
One of his last messages spoke of his canoe-side scaly chums.
“Freeman” has canoed from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama,” reported his wife.
“And, he has entered alligator territory! He says the alligators are 9-15 ft. long, and his canoe is 15 ft.! I don’t like the sound of that!
“Freeman” phoned his wife Saturday from the Lock Master’s Station south of Montgomery, where he is going through a series of three locks on the river. He reported that a 9 ft. alligator was ‘waggling right toward the canoe, and scared the beejezus out of me!’ But, then he splashed his paddle in the water and the alligator turned and swam away. Whew!”
And, typical of Richard, he also said, “this trip has taken a lot out of me, but it has given me so much.”
