When coaches nominate an athlete, it is expected. However, this month’s Rappahannock News Athleti of the Month was nominatec by a bus driver as well. Matt Lawrey, a junior at Rappahannock County High School, started off the 2005 soccer season as his coach, Shay Bell, expected — with gusto and an extreme asset to the team. Shortly after the season began, Lawrey broke three bones in his foot, keeping him in an anchor position on the Panther bench. Last week the Panther boys’ soccer team entered the Bui Run District tournament without Lawrey in the line-up in the coach’s mind.
