Lord Fairfax Community College’s (LFCC) Tech Prep program is holding a summer camp for middle school students July 11 to 15, 2005 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Middletown Campus, located at 173 Skirmisher Lane in Middletown. The 2005 Tech Prep Summer Camp is funded through a grant from Tech Prep in Virginia and will feature workshops that expose students to the construction, information technology and health care fields.
The camp is free and open to current sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Participation is limited to 25 students in each of the three workshops, for a total of 75 students. Acceptance into the camp is on a first come, first serve basis.
The purpose of the camp is to allow students the opportunity to explore technical and professional career options as they prepare for high school and higher education. The three workshops are as follows:
• Carpentry trades — Students will receive safety instruction and get to work with standard and power tools to build a picnic table and park bench.
• Computer technology — Students will learn basic computer skills including networking and troubleshooting problems in computer operation. They will also be exposed to various types of software applications.
• Health care professions — Students wifi be exposed to different areas of health care, such as dental hygiene and nursing. They will be trained in first aid procedures and will perform mock emergency situations. This workshop will enable each student to earn a Heart Saver/First Aid Card.
The camp will conclude on Friday, July 15 with a luncheon and featured speaker, Steve Straight, career and technical education director for Frederick County Public Schools.
