Sheuerlein describes herself as one generation removed from farming. With a grandmother who lived on a farm and a mother who swore she would never pick another vegetable again, Sheuerlein grew up in suburbia. But her family connection to farming was still a presence in her life as Sheuerlein’s grandmother had a small garden of her own and made sure her granddaughter Was introduced to it.
After graduating from high school, Sheuerlein attended Appalachian State University in Boon, North Carolina, where she majored in English and minored in Biology and Sustainable Development. Sheuerlein soon learned that the latter was her true passion and she avidly studied farming techniques, especially organics.
After college Sheuerlein took a job working for The Food Alliance, a nonprofit organization in Portland, Oregon that certified farmers using sustainable agriculture practices. Tired of grant writing for the Alliance, Sheuerlein tried her hand at something new and traveled to Chile to
