Mother’s Day not
a celebration for
Amissville woman

For 40-year-old Viki Shumaker this Mother’s Day will be like no other.
“I don’t want to do anything,” she said, choking back tears. “I just want to be alone.”
Instead of taking her mother Beulah Furr to dinner, Mrs. Shumaker and her family plan to visit the cemeteiy and establish a roadside monument.
Mrs. Furr, 63, and her 67-year-old husband, John, of Bealeton died in a two-vehicle traffic accident on Route 17 near their home on April 10. The Furrs had been married 25 years. A pickup truck crossed the divided highway and slammed into the Furr’s 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Mr. Furr died at the scene, Mrs. Furr died on the way to the hospital. Mrs. Shumaker, one of Mrs. Furr’s five children, not only lost her mother but also her best friend.
“She had the best heart of anyone I have known,” said Mrs. Shumaker. “She always put the needs of others before her own.”
A daily ritual had the two women talking on the phone at least twice. Normally, when Mrs. Shumaker arrived at her office, she picked up the phone and called her mother. On April 10, Mrs. Shumaker called earlier than usual. The mother of two girls knew her mother and Mr. Furr were going shopping in Fredericksburg, and she didn’t want to miss the morning phone conversation. But something else troubled her.
