“I was exhausted all the time,” said Parish. “Every night I ate all I wanted, and I still lost five pounds on the trip.”
He passed through California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, and has countless stories about the people he met on the way.
“I stopped and talked to anyone who wanted to talk,” explained Parish.
He remembers a couple in their eighties in Fort Davis, Texas, who “adopted” him and showed him their town.
Passing through areas that had been hit by Katrina or her sister storms, he saw “whole towns with tarps on their roofs,” and in Cold Spring, Texas, so many hurricane refugees remained in the town that he had trouble finding a hotel room.
