AfroBop Alliance, formerly known as CuBop, play Latin rhythms with jazz harmony. The seven piece band returns to the Theatre at Washington, Virginia on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 8 p.m, after an absence of three years.
The Latin jazz septet describes its music as “instrumental jazz accompanied with the lively rhythms of Latin America. It is sophisticated dance music, accessible to all ears.” Bandleader Joe McCarthy says that the music “will have you dancing in your seats!” According to McCarthy, the band uses the instrumentation of a jazz ensemble augmented with congas, timbales, bongos, bells, etc., while playing compositions in AfroCuban or Brazilian styles.
