Realizing a long-held dream of Maestro Lorin Maazel, music director of the New York Philharmonic, Rappahannock County’s Chateauville Foundation will present its first fullstaged opera production —“The Turn of the Screw”— at the Castleton Theatre on May 20-21.
The cast of this ghost story turned opera will include young singers, as well as talented musicians from The Julliard School nominated by the principal players of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
The performance at will be conducted by Maestro Maazel himself. Supper with the Maazels at the Theatre House will follow the performance.
On Sunday afternoon, Kynan Johns, a rising star from Australia who was Maestro Maazel’s assistant at the Royal Opera House last year, will conduct the performance at 4 p.m.
The music for this performance is a highly regarded work by Benjamin Britten —"The Turn of the Screw”— based on the famed 1898 novella by Henry James. The story is of a young Governess who goes to an English country house to look after two orphans, a brother and sister. She soon discovers that the children are being haunted by the ghosts of a former governess and valet on the estate, and becomes enmeshed in a struggle to save their souls.
Britten’s haunting score accompanies the ghost story to create an atmosphere of mystery .
