“What’s wrong?” she asked three or four times. Mrs. Shumaker’s husband, Buddy, told her to sit down. He broke the bad news about the crash.“It just broke my heart,” Mrs. Shumaker said, tears streaming down her face. “My whole world is just devastated — to be so close to somebody”
Gone are the lasagna and salad Mrs. Furr loved to serve. Gone are the weekend camping trips in Thornburg, where the Furrs and Shumakers maintained campers. Gone are the Saturday shopping trips and scoping out antiques. Gone is the love of landscaping and planting flowers. Gone is the closeness only a mother and daughter establish. A question about what the first boyfriend of Mrs. Shumaker’s 14-year-old daughter, Amberlie, would loqk like will remain unanswered.
“ ‘Nanny’ was special to me because she was always there for me through good times and the bad,” wrote Amberlie in an e-mail. “She’s so great that no other grandmother could compare to her.”
